The Age of Technology

I loved the article we had to read for this topic so I am going to adress each technological advancment they talked about and relate to my personal experience with it.

Calculators: I feel like I am not too depndent on calculators. I do use one in my college algebra class but mostly for the larger exponential problems. Other than that I can usually just scribble out a problem and figure it out easily enough on my own.

Auto-Complete: I don't use auto-complete on my phone. I do like how Google Chrome has a spell check function now though. I have become alittle dependent on that because I am usually pretty bad at spelling.

Texting: I. Hate. Text. Language. When my sister texts me it's almost indecipherable. My mom and I make jokes all the time about how long our texts are because we spell out every word.

Search Engines: The claim made in this point was that there was a less amount of information recall using a search engine. I personally feel that when used effectively search engines can be very usefull in an academic situation. It potentially can open the doors to a lot more information that could be available to you that you never wouldv'e thought of on your own.

Email: OK honestly just don't constantly check your email while you're working.

Websites: Websites are very udefull. We use them to write these blogs and check our assignments and grades. But because the internet is a public domain there is a lot of unuseful and frankly inapropriate. As long as you know the difference the internet can be a very useful source of information.

I personally haven't noticed a change in myself since using technology because I have been familiar with it for such a big part of my life.

(this was the first picture that came up when I searched "the internet")

"Alone Together"

Alright so after watching the ted talk and googling a little more I have come to the realization that Facebook is the "filter bubble" king. Have you ever looked on the side bar the has suggested pages that you can "like?" I don't do much on Facebook but even as it is pulled up in another tab while I'm writing this there are no pages that I outright disagree with. And after researching more I found out that since I have 2 emails connected to my gmail account (including the one that is connected to Facebook), Facebook tracks my google searches and uses them to further influence what they're going to show on my page. I don't know about you guys but that is a little too close for comfort for me.
Oh and to just add to the ever expanding need for my personal information, apparently Facebook and other social media sites are part of the problem of these so called "trackers." Now I know it's mostly for like advertising influence online but what happens if they give out too much? Like my phone number or personal email? I'm just not comfortable with it.
I just want to say that I feel that I could easily live without all of the electronics that I have today. At least I could live easier than my 11 year old sister. My IPod recently got stolen and has affected me in absolutely zero ways during my day to day life. The only thing I miss is being able to take pictures and upload them to Facebook. (I know I ranted a little but I like the connections to my family) My sister on the other hand is almost never seen without hers and almost cried when we couldn't figure out the wifi password at a hotel one night. I've seen that in my age group you either go one way or the other. But with most of the kids my sisters age I've seen that they have 3rd limbs almost that consist of their phones and IThings. Even my brother who is only 16 is not nearly as dependent on his as she is.
     So let's recap;
1. I don't like my online activity being monitered so that advertisments can appeal to me
and
2. My sister needs to read some books :)

Hope you all have had a great week!

The Always Informative Research Paper

Alright so basically this is a simple concept of a paper that is sometimes hard to execute properly. You need to balance fact with a little bit of personal connection to write this paper. (At least that's how I feel)
So the assignment I think can be simply worded as such:

You will find an interesting or thought provoking subject that you would like to inform people about. You will support your subject with the most relevant and useful information that you can dig up. You will connect different supportive topics to your main topic as a good supportive base. Be careful not to use every bit of information you find as you will likely not be able to organize it coherently enough.

Sorry it's not much but I've had a bad weekend and don't feel like writing much :/ Hope this helped you guys a little.

Library v. Internet

Alright so if you read my last post you would know that I am analyzing a song for our upcoming essay assignment. I wanted to try and find the history of this song. Like anything that could tell my why he wrote it. So first I went to the library (thinking that I'd find what I neede on the internet later anyway) So after about an hour on the databases, and half an hour looking through books that I found on Mr. Cash I had found zero information on what I was trying to find.
So I'm on google for 3 minutes and sure enough find exactly what I needed from a credible source! (archived in the US embassy) It was incredibly helpful because it helped me further prove the points I am trying to make to support him. Long story short he wrote this song as a protest against society! Exactly what I was hoping for :) Anyway I don't have much else to say so here's the song, I hope you enjoy it.

Man in Black

Alright so I had my music playing while looking online for an essay to analyze for our upcoming assignment. Anyway I was having a really hard time of finding one that had some obvious rhetoric (you know to make my life a little easier) and the song Man in Black by Johnny Cash came on. And it was like a stereotypical ray of sunshine shined onto my stereo as if to say, "convince your teacher to let you do this." So I emailed Dr Sentell and asked if I could analyze a song...HE SAID YES!! :D It really is exciting to find a piece that you have to do a project on that you really enjoy.
So the basics of this song is him justifying why he wears black all of the time. I plan to analyze in 2 major ways: first playing off of the pathos of the whole song because he explains that he wears it for the people who are poverty stricken and things of that nature. And second I'm going to show the ethos side of it when he explains that for every rich person their should be someone for the poor.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

Also I'll analyze how he uses some metaphors and imagery to support his argument that basically their are people who are neglected and need help that we are ignoring.

The Paramedic Method

The Paramedic Method

  1. Circle the prepositions (of, in, about, for, onto, into)
  2. Draw a box around the "is" verb forms
  3. Ask, "Where's the action?"
  4. Change the "action" into a simple verb
  5. Move the doer into the subject (Who's kicking whom)
  6. Eliminate any unnecessary slow wind-ups
  7. Eliminate any redundancies.

So after I read the assignment and googled a little I kind of got excited about this assignment. Not that I'm like a total nerd or anything but of how funny you could make these examples. So here are my top 7:

7. I don't think anyone can acquire the time needed to do the required task. (14)
Ain't nobody got time for that. (6)

6. Whenever I get to marching band I have to walk up and down several flights of stairs in Brandt Music Hall to go to and from the marching band field for practice. (31)
There are a lot of stairs in Brandt.(8)

5. My roommate can not grasp the idea that she could be misinformed about certain subjects that come up in conversation. (20)
My roommate thinks she is always right. (7)

4. The weather today was particularly dreary and grey. (8)
    It was cloudy today. (4)

3. I was walking to meet someone outside and stumbled after accidently hitting the door frame with my foot while I was heading out the door. (25)
I tripped on the door frame. (6)

2. I think the amount of television that is watched by 5 to 12 year olds today is exponentially larger that it has been in the past 10 years when compared to like statistics. (33)
Kids watch a lot of TV. (6)

1. The intelligences of the generation of adults around my age are so low that i can not comprehend it most of the time that I come in contact with it.  (30)
People are so dumb I don't even understand. (8)

     Hope you all enjoyed these!!
